White Woman Bullies Clients at Carrefour Supermarket at The Hub, Karen

A woman who went to shop at Carrefour Supermarket at The Hub in Karen has accused the supermarket of doing nothing when she was discriminated against at the establishment.

In a Facebook post on Saturday evening, the woman Belinda Muendo (Wangu wa Muendo) narrated how a white woman called her names and attacked her for being part of the “lazy Africans.” The white lady then went ahead and threw her shopping which she was trying to pay for on the floor.

The woman didn’t receive much help from the chain as managers were no easy to reach while the till attendants were feeling helpless as the white woman kept intimidating them.

The white woman jumped the queue before lecturing the two blacks she found ahead on the queue as reasons why Africans will stay lazy and poor.

While this might look like an isolated incident, we have done a casual search of Carrefour and found that it is the norm in most of the Carrefour establishments worldwide. There have been accusations of racism in Carrefour malls in India, Malaysia and Dubai.

The management responded late after the post went viral without any clear way forward but just promises of investigations.

This is not the first time the Kenyan branch of the chain is being accused of prejudice. In 2016, a customer wrote to COFEK accusing the management of discrimination.

It seems that racism is one of the values or ideals of the chain which is hoping to survive locally. It might not end up well for them as all the South African establishments which opened locally with racist attitude had to close shop and exit the market completely.

We just hope that they will learn their lesson soon enough as it looks so bad on them now.
