Raphael Saadiq Siblings: Meet D’Wayne Wiggins

Raphael Saadiq is a highly acclaimed American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer, born Charles Ray Wiggins on May 14, 1966, in Oakland, California.
He rose to fame as the vocalist and bassist for the influential R&B group Tony! Toni! Toné!, which he co-founded, and has since built a distinguished solo career while collaborating with numerous major artists across genres.
Siblings
Raphael Saadiq has one sibling, his brother D’Wayne Wiggins, who became his bandmate in Tony! Toni! Toné!.
D’Wayne, an accomplished guitarist and songwriter, played a pivotal role in encouraging Raphael’s early musical pursuits, including his passion for playing bass.
Tragically, Saadiq has endured profound loss with four of his siblings passing away at relatively young ages.
D’Wayne passed away more recently from bladder cancer in March 2025.
Career
Saadiq’s career began in his teens when he honed his skills playing bass and singing gospel music.
He attended Castlemont High School in Oakland, where he received foundational training that led to an opportunity to audition for Sheila E., resulting in him joining her band to support Prince’s 1986 world tour.
In 1986, he formed Tony! Toni! Toné! with his brother D’Wayne Wiggins and their cousin Timothy Christian Riley.

Initially a playful name, the group evolved into a major R&B force in the late 1980s and early 1990s, delivering hits such as “Feels Good,” “Anniversary,” and “It Never Rains (In Southern California)” across four albums.
After the group’s initial run, Saadiq adopted his stage name (meaning “man of his word” in Arabic, chosen for its sound and to establish his own identity separate from his brother) and explored other projects, including co-founding the supergroup Lucy Pearl in 1999.
His solo debut, Instant Vintage (2002), earned critical praise and Grammy nominations, followed by Ray Ray (2004).
Subsequent albums like The Way I See It (2008) paid homage to classic soul and garnered further acclaim.
Saadiq has also established himself as a sought-after producer and songwriter, crafting tracks for artists including Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Jill Scott, Stevie Wonder, Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Solange Knowles, John Legend, and many others.
Notable contributions include co-writing D’Angelo’s “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” and Solange’s “Cranes in the Sky.”
He has ventured into film and television scoring, earning nominations for an Academy Award and Golden Globes for “Mighty River” from Mudbound.
More recently, he has toured with revivals of Tony! Toni! Toné! material and presented personal one-man shows like No Bandwidth, reflecting on his legacy amid personal challenges.
Accolades
Raphael Saadiq has won three Grammy Awards from over 20 nominations, primarily for his songwriting and performances, including honors for collaborations and solo work.
His involvement in Beyoncé’s albums Renaissance and Cowboy Carter brought additional Grammy nominations, culminating in a win for Album of the Year as a songwriter on the latter.
Beyond the Grammys, he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song (“Mighty River” from Mudbound), two Golden Globe nominations in the same category, and a Primetime Emmy nomination.
Time magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential People in 2012, and his work has sold millions of records worldwide, cementing his status as a cornerstone of modern R&B and soul.
