Robert Plant is one of the most iconic figures in rock music history.

Born Robert Anthony Plant on August 20, 1948, in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England, he rose to global fame as the lead singer and lyricist of the legendary rock band Led Zeppelin.

Known for his powerful, versatile voice, mystical lyrics, and charismatic stage presence, Plant has influenced generations of musicians with his blend of blues, folk, hard rock, and world music elements.

He grew up in a working-class family in the Black Country region, the son of Robert C. Plant, a civil engineer and former Royal Air Force member, and Annie Celia Plant, who had Romani heritage.

    Siblings

Robert had one sibling, a younger sister named Alison Plant.

However, information about his family background remains relatively private, with limited details available about Alison’s life or their relationship.

    Career

Plant’s career began in the mid-1960s when he performed with various local bands in the English Midlands, drawing inspiration from blues artists like Howlin’ Wolf and Robert Johnson.

His big break came in 1968 when guitarist Jimmy Page recruited him to form Led Zeppelin, following the Yardbirds’ dissolution.

As the band’s frontman, Plant helped define their sound through albums like Led Zeppelin I (1969), Led Zeppelin II (1969), and the untitled fourth album (1971), featuring timeless tracks such as “Stairway to Heaven,” “Whole Lotta Love,” and “Kashmir.”

Led Zeppelin’s massive success made them one of the best-selling bands ever, but the group disbanded in 1980 after the death of drummer John Bonham.

In the 1980s, Plant launched a successful solo career with albums like Pictures at Eleven (1982) and The Principle of Moments (1983), exploring a more introspective and eclectic style.

He experimented with genres over the decades, including collaborations such as the folk-rock project with Alison Krauss on Raising Sand (2007) and its follow-up Raise the Roof (2021).

Plant also formed bands like the Honeydrippers and Band of Joy, and he has continued touring and recording into his later years, emphasizing roots music, blues, and global influences while largely avoiding Led Zeppelin reunions beyond select performances.

    Accolades

As a member of Led Zeppelin, Plant was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.

He received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005 alongside surviving bandmates.

His collaboration with Alison Krauss on Raising Sand swept five Grammy Awards in 2009, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for “Please Read the Letter.”

Plant has been ranked among the greatest singers of all time, topping polls such as Planet Rock’s “greatest voice in rock” and earning spots on lists from Rolling Stone, NPR, and Hit Parader, where he was named the Greatest Metal Vocalist of All Time in 2006.

Additional honors include a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) appointment in 2009 and various Americana music awards for his later work.
