Ronwen Hayden Williams is a South African professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Mamelodi Sundowns in the Premier Soccer League and captains the South Africa national team, known as Bafana Bafana.
Born on 21 January 1992 in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), he stands 1.84 metres tall and has become one of the most respected goalkeepers in African football.
Williams grew up in the Gelvandale area, a tough neighbourhood where he developed his love for the game early, influenced by a family deeply involved in soccer.
He left home at the age of 12 to join the SuperSport United academy, setting him on a path that would see him rise to national prominence and international recognition, including a nomination for the Yashin Trophy at the 2024 Ballon d’Or awards, where he ranked among the world’s top goalkeepers.
Siblings
Ronwen is the youngest of three children.
His older brother, Marvin Williams, was a keen soccer player and marine ranger who served as a major influence and closest supporter in Ronwen’s early life.
Marvin died in a car crash on 1 April 2010 on the R72 outside Alexandria, along with two others, in a head-on collision.
At the time, Ronwen was 18 and still developing at the SuperSport United academy; the loss devastated him so deeply that he contemplated quitting football altogether and stayed away for weeks.
He has a tattoo of Marvin and often looks to the sky during matches, speaking to him for guidance, especially in high-pressure moments such as penalty shootouts.
Williams also has a sister, Yolanda Freeman, who has publicly expressed pride in her brother’s achievements and the family’s support for his journey.

Career
Williams began his youth career with Shatterprufe Rovers before joining SuperSport United in 2004.
He made his senior debut for the club in 2012, first in the CAF Champions League and later in the Premier Soccer League, establishing himself as a reliable presence over a 12-year spell that included nearly 280 league appearances.
In July 2022, he transferred to Mamelodi Sundowns, where he quickly became the first-choice goalkeeper and a key figure in the team’s domestic and continental campaigns.
On the international stage, Williams made his Bafana Bafana debut in a 2014 friendly against Brazil.
He was named national team captain by coach Hugo Broos in 2021 and has since earned dozens of caps. He featured at the Tokyo Olympics and multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
His most memorable international performance came at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where he saved four penalties in the quarter-final shootout against Cape Verde to help South Africa reach the semi-finals for the first time in 24 years.
He also contributed to South Africa’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Accolades
Williams has collected numerous team and individual honours.
With SuperSport United, he won three Nedbank Cups (2011–12, 2015–16, 2016–17), two MTN 8 titles (2017 and 2019), and the Telkom Knockout in 2014.
At Mamelodi Sundowns, he has secured multiple Premier Soccer League titles, the African Football League in 2023, and further domestic success, along with a CAF Champions League triumph in a subsequent season.
Individually, he was named Best Goalkeeper of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after South Africa finished third.
He earned the PSL Footballer of the Season award for 2023–24, African Football League Best Goalkeeper in 2023, African Goalkeeper of the Year in 2024, and African Inter-Club Player of the Year in 2024.
His performances also earned him a place among the nominees for the Ballon d’Or Yashin Trophy in 2024, finishing ninth and becoming one of the first African-club-based players to receive such recognition.
