Roope Hintz is a Finnish professional ice hockey forward and alternate captain for the Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League (NHL).
Born on November 17, 1996, in Nokia, Finland, the 6-foot-3, 217-pound center is known for his blend of size, speed, intelligence, strong two-way play, and scoring ability.
Nicknamed the “Ace of Spades,” Hintz has become a cornerstone of the Stars’ lineup, often centering the top line and contributing significantly on both ends of the ice.
He grew up in a multi-sport athletic family in the Tampere area and began skating at age three with the local Nokia Pyry program before focusing on hockey.
Siblings
Roope has one older brother, Miiko Hintz, who is four years his senior.
While their parents Marika and Kai both played basketball growing up, Roope chose to follow in his brother’s footsteps and pursue ice hockey instead.
Miiko played professionally for several years in Finland’s top leagues before retiring.
Career
Hintz developed through Finland’s junior ranks with Ilves and turned professional with HIFK in the Liiga.
His strong play in Finland’s top league led the Dallas Stars to select him in the second round, 49th overall, of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

After completing his Liiga commitments and a stint in the American Hockey League, he made the full-time jump to the NHL in the 2019-20 season.
Once established in Dallas, Hintz quickly emerged as a top-line center known for his hockey IQ, faceoff skills, and chemistry with wingers such as Jason Robertson.
He has delivered consistent production, including multiple 30-goal seasons and high point totals, while excelling in the postseason.
Notable playoff highlights include a franchise-record performance in a 2023 first-round series and helping the Stars reach the 2020 Stanley Cup Final.
In November 2022, he signed an eight-year contract extension worth $67.6 million, locking him in as a long-term core piece for the contending Stars.
Internationally, he has represented Finland at World Junior Championships and contributed to a bronze medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Hintz has received votes for the Frank J. Selke Trophy, awarded to the league’s best defensive forward, in multiple seasons, including strong finishes that placed him among the top contenders.
He has also garnered consideration for the Lady Byng Trophy, recognizing sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with high-level play.
On the ice, Hintz has recorded career highs such as 37 goals and 75 points in a single season and delivered standout postseason performances, including a playoff hat trick and leading the Stars in scoring during deep runs.
