Runar Berg is a Norwegian former professional footballer who played primarily as a midfielder.
Born on 7 October 1970 in The Hague, Netherlands, while his father Harald Berg was playing for ADO Den Haag, he grew up as part of a prominent football family rooted in Bodø.
Berg spent the majority of his career across multiple spells at the club.
He also represented Norway at senior level with five caps between 1994 and 2003, scoring no goals, after earlier appearances for youth national teams.
He retired in September 2010 and remains associated with the club’s history and community support.
Siblings
Runar is the brother of footballers Ørjan Berg and Arild Berg, as well as musician Terje Berg.
Ørjan, the older brother born in 1968, enjoyed a distinguished career as a midfielder with Bodø/Glimt and especially Rosenborg, where he won multiple league titles, and earned 19 caps for Norway.
Arild Berg, the younger brother (1975–2019), also played professionally, including for Bodø/Glimt, and represented Norway at youth levels, though personal challenges limited his career potential.
Terje Berg pursued music rather than football.
The siblings are sons of former Bodø/Glimt midfielder and playmaker Harald “Dutte” Berg.
Career
Berg began his senior career at Bodø/Glimt in the late 1980s. After the club’s relegation, he joined Rosenborg in 1990.
He made limited appearances but contributed to a league and cup double while playing alongside his brother Ørjan.

He spent 1991 at Tromsø before returning to Bodø/Glimt from 1992 to 1996.
During this period, he helped the side win promotion and establish itself in the top flight.
A second spell at Rosenborg from 1997 to 1999 brought further success and Champions League experience.
In 1999 he moved to Italian side Venezia. He appeared in Serie A and later Serie B amid the club’s financial difficulties.
He then joined Lyn on loan in 2001. He returned permanently to Bodø/Glimt in 2002 and remained there until his retirement in 2010.
He became one of the club’s most capped players, with hundreds of appearances and goals across all competitions.
In 2009, during severe financial trouble at the club, Berg waived his substantial salary of around 100,000 euros and helped organise local fundraising.
He briefly returned for amateur side Junkeren in 2012.
Accolades
Berg won four Norwegian league titles with Rosenborg in 1990, 1997, 1998 and 1999.
He also won three Norwegian Cups, two with Rosenborg in 1990 and 1999 and one with Bodø/Glimt in 1993.
He was part of domestic doubles with Rosenborg in 1990 and 1999.
He was named Norwegian Player of the Year by VG in 1993 after a standout season that included a league runners-up finish and cup triumph with Bodø/Glimt.
Additional individual recognition included being named Årets nordlending in 2009 and receiving other local and supporter awards for his loyalty and contributions during difficult times at Bodø/Glimt.
In 2021, the entire Berg family received the Kniksen Honour Award for their collective, multi-generational impact on Norwegian football.
