Ruto Explains Why Raila Lies-in-State at Parliament

President William Ruto has explained why the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga lies-in-state at Parliament Buildings, also known as the August House.

In a statement shared on social media after paying his last respects to the late leader on Friday morning, President Ruto said Raila’s long and distinguished service as a Member of Parliament made Parliament the most fitting place to honour him.

“For fifteen years, our departed leader, the Right Honourable Raila Amollo Odinga, served the people of Kibera Constituency with unwavering dedication and distinction as their Member of Parliament,” Ruto stated.

He added that during his time in Parliament, Raila was a tireless champion of justice, democracy, and progress, playing a key role in shaping some of Kenya’s most important laws — including the passage of the 2010 Constitution during his tenure as Prime Minister.

“It is, therefore, most fitting that he lies-in-state at the August House, granting the three arms of Government — Executive, Parliament, and the Judiciary — and the nation a solemn moment to honour, with reverence and gratitude, the life and legacy of a true patriot and statesman,” Ruto wrote.

The body of Raila Odinga is expected to be moved later this morning to Nyayo National Stadium for the State Funeral Service. The casket will leave Parliament after all dignitaries, including the President, have arrived.

Several world and regional leaders are expected to attend the service, which will begin at 9 a.m. and run until noon.

Raila Odinga was pronounced dead on Wednesday while receiving treatment in India. Following the announcement, President Ruto declared a seven-day period of national mourning, with the national flag flown at half-mast across the country.

Friday, the day of the state funeral, was declared a public holiday in honour of the late opposition leader.

Raila will be laid to rest on Sunday at his home in Bondo, Siaya County.
