Ruto Reaffirms Kenya-Ukraine Ties As He Bids Farewell To Outgoing Ambassador

President William Ruto has reaffirmed Kenya’s long-standing ties with Ukraine, which have lasted for more than three decades. He spoke on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, while bidding farewell to outgoing Ukrainian Ambassador Andril Pravednyk at State House, Nairobi.

In a message shared on his X account, President Ruto highlighted the strong bilateral relations between the two countries and the areas of cooperation that have developed since the establishment of diplomatic ties.

“Diplomatic relations between Kenya and Ukraine go back more than 30 years, cementing cooperation between our two countries in various areas,” Ruto said.

The President pointed out trade as one of the key pillars of the relationship. He noted that Kenya imports grains such as wheat and maize, as well as fertilisers from Ukraine, while exporting tea, coffee, flowers, and cabbages.

He also reflected on the impact of the ongoing war in Ukraine, now in its fourth year, saying the conflict has disrupted global supply chains, particularly in fuel, fertilisers, and grains, affecting countries like Kenya.

“The effects of the war in Ukraine have been felt far and wide, especially in the disruption of supply chains of grains, fuel and fertilisers,” he noted.

Ruto further stressed Kenya’s consistent position on the conflict, reaffirming the country’s commitment to international law and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

“Our position on the war has been clear: We strongly believe in the UN Charter, and especially on national sovereignty and territorial integrity. In addition, it is our firm view that dialogue, not war, is the path to peace and an end to hostilities,” he said.

The President added that Ambassador Pravednyk delivered a goodwill message from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during the meeting.
