Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly survived impeachment following Deputy President William Ruto’s intervention on Tuesday.

According to a local daily, the DP called for a meeting and read the riot act to the Jubilee Party Members. Ruto is said to have urged the party members to drop the bid which word has it had already been signed by 67 members surpassing the required 43 signatures.

“The DP said the members should stop tarnishing the party’s name,” a source privy to the details told the daily.

The DP also noted that a meeting will be called where Elachi and the clerk, Jacob Ngwele will settle their differences.

Reports also indicate that during Tuesday’s session Waithaka Ward MCA Antony Kiragu Karanja, who had drafted the motion was a no show prompting the deputy speaker John Kamangu Nyumu to adjourn the sitting to Wednesday at 2.30 pm.

“Is there anyone who was sent to table the notice of motion…? The House stands adjourned to tomorrow 2.30pm,” he said.

But it said that the Waithaka MCA was asked by majority leader Abdi Guyo and other Jubilee leaders to drop the motion.

“It’s unbelievable that Guyo, the speaker and other members are urging me to drop the motion,” he said.

The MCA said that Elachi was guilty of undermining the authority of the County Assembly Service Board and abuse of office hence his impeachment bid.

Elachi and Ngwele were suspended by the board on Monday to pave way for investigations into the graft allegations.
