President William Ruto convened a meeting of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) National Governing Council to deliberate on the political party’s transformation and coalition talks with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) at State House Nairobi on Monday.
Addressing 164 MPs, 18 governors, 14 deputy governors and 910 MCAs, the President, who is also the UDA party leader, said the party is being transformed into a powerful national political party whose philosophy and vision for beyond generations.
The UDA National Governing Council comprises all elected leaders – governors, deputy governors, senators, MPs, MCAs and county speakers.
On the UDA-ODM coalition talks, Ruto said it guarantees a resounding victory in the 2027 elections, providing another opportunity to continue implementing transformative programmes and policies for our country.
He pointed out that the government is seeking a broader political coalition in an effort to consolidate national unity.
Saying UDA won the last election by a 200,000-vote margin, Ruto noted that the next election must be won through a resounding victory for the party.
“This election, we want to win with a margin of between two million and three million votes,” he said.
He explained that inclusive governance was crucial for the country for its role in national unity.
“From the position I hold, I can tell you that there is enough for every Kenyan. One does not need to miss out for another to get. There is an opportunity for us to fit in one government,” he told the leaders.
He noted that it was therefore necessary for UDA to work with other leaders and political parties in building a more cohesive, more united and more transformed Kenya.
At the same time, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki used the occasion to enumerate the government’s development scorecard for the past three years.
He cited the achievements in agricultural production and productivity, universal health coverage, electricity connection, affordable housing, and access to affordable credit, among others.
On his part, Ruto said in the 2022 UDA manifesto, the party made a commitment to transform the country by investing in agriculture, making affordable credit accessible, creating millions of jobs, and implementing universal healthcare, among others.
“We are pleased we have been faithful, page by page and chapter by chapter, in the delivery of this contract with Kenyans,” President Ruto noted.
Ruto defended privatisation of government entities, saying their proceeds will be used to finance the development of mega infrastructure.
“The proceeds from the privatisation of Safaricom and Kenya Pipeline Company, among others, will be used to build more roads, dams, airports and rail, and generate more electricity for the country’s makeover to first-world status, ” said President Ruto.
On the recent UDA grassroots elections, he announced there would be repeat polls in polling centres where less than 50 party members participated.
“The National Executive Committee has directed the party to carry out repeat grassroots elections in all areas where we did not do well,” President Ruto said.
Announcing that the elections will then progress from the grassroots to the national level, the President pointed out that there were 580,000 positions to be filled.
He made it clear that party elections will be free and fair, saying democracy must prevail for UDA to become stronger.
UDA Secretary-General Omar Hassan read the resolutions agreed on at the NGC, including the approval of the proposed coalition talks with ODM.
Earlier, UDA Chairperson Cecily Mbarire, outlining the county governments’ development scorecard, said the Social Health Authority (SHA) had paid Sh16.79 billion to hospitals in counties since October 1, 2024.
“We appreciate the work SHA is doing to transform lives at the counties and to implement universal health coverage,” she said.
