A former MTN Uganda official has sued the company over wrongful dismissal. Through the High Court in Kampala, Richard Mwami who formerly headed MTN Uganda’s Public Access and Mobile Money division, has attained summons requiring MTN Uganda to appear before the court and explain why he was dismissed.

MTN Uganda sacked Richard in April over theft of up to $3.5 million (Ush 9 Billion) by manipulating of the mobile money suspense account. MTN accused Mwami of being “negligent in executing his functions, resulting in the loss of billions of shillings through a mobile money scam.”

The fraud was detected by MTN’s business analyst, Barbara Nalukwago, who while on routine duty detected a fraudulent UShs18 impending transfer.

Mwami was MTN Village Phone manager from October 31, 2003 and became head of mobile money when the facility was launched in 2009.

The court summons issued on June 20 require MTN Uganda to appear before the court to defend itself against charges of wrongful dismissal. In the suit filed, Mr Mwami is also seeking UShs100 million in special damages, general damages and costs of the suit.

Court documents show that in December last year, when MTN’s business analyst Barbara Nalukwago detected a fraudulent Shs18 billion transaction in transfer account, she alerted management.
