Safaricom, Sprite Equip Over 500 Pwani University Students with Digital Income Skills

More than 500 students at Pwani University were on Friday equipped with practical digital income skills during a high-energy content creation masterclass hosted by Safaricom PLC in partnership with Sprite.

The “Hook’d on Fresh” masterclass, held in Kilifi County, brought together leading digital creators and industry experts to train students on how to leverage social media platforms, build personal brands, and turn their online content into sustainable income streams.

The session combined live demonstrations, expert-led discussions, and practical lessons tailored to the realities of Kenya’s growing creator economy, with a focus on helping young people tap into digital opportunities beyond traditional employment.

For many students, the programme offered a fresh perspective on how creativity can become a source of financial independence.

“I have always owned a smartphone and occasionally made TikTok videos, but I never knew how to make money from my content. Today’s session has been an eye-opener for many of us here who have always aspired to earn from our creativity,” said Alfred Fondo, a Computer Science student at Pwani University.

He added that the training had inspired him to take content creation more seriously, not just as entertainment but as a potential source of income that could help him become more financially independent.

Beyond content creation, students were also taken through financial literacy lessons, including how to save and invest earnings from digital work to support long-term financial stability.

Among those who spoke at the event were Kenyan digital creators Tileh Pacbro, Rono, Juma Shibe and Vallery, who shared practical insights on growing audiences, understanding online trends, and monetising digital platforms.

Phelister Wanjiru from Safaricom PLC also introduced students to Ziidi Money Market Fund, encouraging them to adopt disciplined saving habits early.

Speaking during the event, Fawzia Ali Kimanthi said the initiative is part of efforts to help young Kenyans transform their passion into viable livelihoods.

“Content creation is huge for youth today, and through S-Hook, we are proud to empower them by equipping their passion with the platforms and tools to turn it into real livelihoods,” she said.

The Kilifi edition builds on previous Hook’d on Fresh activations at Africa Nazarene University, University of Eldoret and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, where hundreds of students have also received training on digital skills and financial literacy.

The initiative reflects a broader push by Safaricom PLC and Sprite to empower young Kenyans with the tools, knowledge and connectivity needed to thrive in the digital economy.
