Safaricom PLC has announced that its economic, social, and environmental impact hit the Sh1.1 trillion mark in the financial year ended March 2025.
The milestone, revealed in the company’s latest Sustainable Business Report, represents 16 times the firm’s financial profit and underscores Safaricom’s deepening role as a purpose-driven technology company.
According to the report, the company contributed Sh809 billion to Kenya’s GDP through its operations during the period. The surge in True Value was driven by enhanced value creation through M-PESA, increased corporate social investments, and expansion in capital and operational expenditures that stimulated wider economic growth.
True Value measures a company’s overall contribution to society by quantifying its total impact beyond profits — including economic, social, and environmental outcomes. The model helps businesses understand how to create long-term shared value, strengthen stakeholder relationships, and guide decisions that foster resilience and inclusivity.
“Over the past 25 years, Safaricom has evolved into a purpose-led technology company guided by one simple mission: to transform lives by connecting people to people, people to opportunity, and people to information. At the heart of this journey is sustainability, embedded not as an obligation, but as a business imperative,” said Dr Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom PLC.
“Now in our 14th year of publishing the Annual Sustainable Business Report, we continue to hold ourselves accountable, using the Sustainable Development Goals as our blueprint for impact,” he added.
Themed “Anchored on Purpose, Accelerating a Digital Future,” the 2025 report highlights Safaricom’s continued investment in innovation, partnerships, and technology to drive financial inclusion, improve education and healthcare access, and connect communities across Kenya.
