Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya was on Friday elected chairman of the Council of Governors (CoG) with Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru being voted as the vice chair.
Both belong to Jubilee Party who had the tyranny of numbers (25) with President Uhuru Kenyatta openly endorsing Mvurya who will succeed Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok in six months at the end of his one-year term.

However, it took in-house intervention for a section of Ruto allied governors from Jubilee to vote for Mvurya as they were adamant to retain Nanok terming Mvurya as ‘weak.’
Other sources in the ruling party raised concerns that the soft spoken Governor is not as unconventional as he should be having allowed Kwale County Assembly to pass the people’s assembly motion right under his watch and that NASA-read-ODM has been having a field day in the County including having a speaker allied to the party.

It is alleged that DP Ruto was not keen on Mvurya especially with Waiguru as his deputy with the latter touted to likely to overshadow the CoG boss which consequently might interfere with Ruto’s 2022 plans.
Nanok is said to have already warmed up to Jubilee and Ruto’s camp preferred him to remain as CoG chair considering his tough stance on issues that has seen many in Nasa question his loyalty to the coalition.
