Senator Mundigi denies breaching DP party rules in Embu campaigns

Embu Senator Alexander Munyi Mundigi has strongly declined accusations by the Democratic Party of Kenya (DPK) that he breached party loyalty by campaigning for a rival candidate and supporting activities linked to the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

The Democratic Party, in a warning letter dated November 18, 2025, accused the senator of actively campaigning for a candidate who is not the party’s nominated aspirant for the Mbeere North parliamentary seat.

The party further alleged that Mundigi continued to publicly associate with Kenya Kwanza despite what it says was the party’s withdrawal from the coalition.

DPK warned that the alleged actions amounted to gross misconduct under Article 8 of its constitution, directing the senator to cease the activities, submit a written explanation within 72 hours, and reaffirm his loyalty to the party, failure to which disciplinary action including expulsion could be initiated.

However, through his lawyer Danstan Omari, Senator Mundigi dismissed the allegations, arguing that the party had not lawfully exited the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

In a response dated December 18, the lawyer said any withdrawal from the coalition would require a formal resolution by the party’s top organs, including the National Delegates Committee and the National Governing Council.

The lawyers further stated that the senator was out of the country on official duties in Uganda when the allegations arose and was not accorded an opportunity to be heard before the warning was issued.

Omari maintained that Senator Mundigi, who is also the Acting Deputy Party Leader, remains a loyal and fully paid-up member of the Democratic Party of Kenya and retains the right to support candidates within the broader Kenya Kwanza coalition.

The response also faulted the party leadership for threatening disciplinary action without due process, terming the move as ” a claw back on the grip and role he plays as an acting deputy party leader.”
