Senators Faki And Karen Nyamu Elected To Lead Senate Land And Environment Committee

Mombasa Senator Mohamed Faki and Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu have been unanimously elected as the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson, respectively, of the Senate Committee on Land, Environment, and Natural Resources.

In his acceptance speech, Senator Faki expressed gratitude to committee members for their confidence in his leadership. He highlighted the committee’s broad mandate, which includes overseeing crucial matters such as land, environment, and mining.

“Our task is bigger than what is outlined on paper, but with the cooperation of committee members and the secretariat, we will accomplish all we set out to achieve in our work plan,” he stated.

Senator Faki, who represents Mombasa County, has been an active member of key Senate committees. As of February 2025, he serves on the Senate Business Committee, which oversees legislative priorities. In previous years, he was a member of the Finance and Budget Committee, as well as the Labour and Social Welfare Committee, where he contributed to discussions on financial legislation and labor laws. Before joining the Senate in 2017, he practiced law at Khatib & Company Advocates.

Senator Nyamu, in her acceptance remarks, thanked committee members for entrusting her with the role of Vice Chairperson. She pledged her commitment to serving Kenyans and ensuring the committee fulfills its mandate effectively.

Nyamu, who has been serving as the Vice Chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence, and Foreign Relations since October 2022, has played a role in handling national security, foreign relations, and disaster preparedness matters. She is also among senators earning additional allowances for holding committee leadership positions.
