Senators have today urged the government to declare hunger a national disaster. They also asked that the Military be deployed in the hunger stricken areas to save the lives.

Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula said that it was an embarrassment as Turkana receive the biggest allocations and the county could afford to give residents subsidies.

“We don’t want this cycle of embarrassment of people dying of hunger to be part of our history. The Turkana government should freeze development programmes and save lives.”

He said that all this was happening areas which are termed as food baskets were unable to sell their produce.

Senate minority leader James Orengo blamed the government for failing to realize the impact of famine in the country.

“It is a matter of fact people are dying of famine and hunger in Turkana. In the immediate term, we hope people will see some intervention to help alleviate the situation. It is terrible that just next to Turkana, there is a granary of Kenya,” the Siaya senator said.
