A senior police officer surrendered his official pistol after he was linked to an incident where two men were shot and wounded in a brawl at a club in Kitengela, Kajiado County.
The officer is based at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters. He is of the rank of Commissioner of Police and holds a powerful position. He is said to have been present at the bar when the shooting happened on Sunday dawn.
Witnesses said he used his pistol to shoot at the two in a confrontation.
The police who are handling the case said they had sent his pistol for ballistic tests to establish if it was involved in the shooting.
About six cartridges were recovered at the scene and also sent for tests.
The officer was also grilled on Monday when he surrendered the weapon, police said adding he denied the claims.
The officer was said to be the senior police officer who was at the C and M Bar and Lounge.
It is not clear what prompted the confrontation and subsequent shooting at about 2 am on Sunday January 25.
Police revisited the scene on Sunday and recovered six more spent cartridges and a bullet head.
The shooting emanated from the club and extended to the nearby Acacia Road where three of the spent cartridges were recovered, police said.
One of the injured victims was found lying on the roadside with a bullet wound in the lower abdomen and police said on Monday he was in a stable but serious condition in hospital.
The owner of the club and his guard were arrested for grilling over the shooting.
The team retrieved security footage that captured the drama for analysis as part of their probe.
Witnesses said they saw the gunman confront the victims from the bar to the main entrance.
A security camera on the neigbouring structure captured other revealers escape the scene as the shooting ensued.
The two are in serious condition, police said on Tuesday.
Police said they plan to press charges after their investigations are complete.
Such dramas have been common in emerging clubs in estates amid calls for regulation of the establishments, which are also blamed for noise pollution.
