Seth Jones, born Jared Seth Jones on October 3, 1994, in Arlington, Texas, is an American professional ice hockey defenseman for the Florida Panthers in the National Hockey League (NHL).

The son of former NBA player Ronald “Popeye” Jones, he stands 6’4″ and brings a strong two-way game, exceptional skating, and leadership to the blue line.

Drafted fourth overall by the Nashville Predators in 2013, Jones has carved out a notable career across multiple teams, including the Columbus Blue Jackets and Chicago Blackhawks, before joining the Panthers.

Siblings

Seth is the middle of three sons born to Amy and Ronald “Popeye” Jones.

His older brother Justin stayed involved in the family’s athletic journey but did not pursue professional hockey.

His younger brother Caleb Jones is also a defenseman in the NHL, currently with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Jones brothers have shared the ice as teammates with the Chicago Blackhawks and have faced each other in games, creating memorable family moments.

Career

Jones began playing organized hockey around age five while his family lived in Denver during his father’s NBA stint with the Nuggets.

The family later returned to Texas, but his passion for the sport grew through junior hockey.

He excelled with the Portland Winterhawks in the Western Hockey League (WHL) before making his NHL debut.

After being drafted by Nashville, Jones spent time with the Predators, then had a lengthy tenure with the Columbus Blue Jackets, where he served as captain and posted strong offensive numbers from the back end.

A trade to the Chicago Blackhawks reunited him with brother Caleb for two seasons.

In February 2025, he was traded to the Florida Panthers, where he contributed significantly to their playoff run.

Jones played a key role in the Panthers’ back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 2024 and 2025, adding stability and production on the blue line.

Internationally, he has represented the United States, winning gold medals at the IIHF World U18 Championships and participating in World Junior events.

Accolades

Jomes was named to the NHL Second All-Star Team in 2018 and has been selected to the NHL All-Star Game.

His junior accolades include WHL First All-Star Team honors and a WHL Championship.

The pinnacle of his career came with the Stanley Cup championships in 2025 (and contributing to the Panthers’ repeat success), marking his first title and adding to his family’s unique sporting legacy that also includes an NBA championship through his father.
