As plans for the extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to Kisumu continue, the economic benefits of its construction are highly anticipated.
SGR will be set up in Malaba town linking Kisumu port to Mombasa thus easing the transport of cargo to other countries in the East African Region.
The extension comes at a time when construction of a lake port is set to take place along the shores of Lake Victoria in Usare village thus improving trade with Ugandaโs Port Bell, Tanzaniaโs Mwanza Port, South Sudanโs Jinja Port and Rwandaโs Kimondo Bay.
According to Kenya Chamber of Commerce and Industry branch chairman Israel Agina the SGR will boost competition amongst manufacturerโs while also encourage the countries economic growth and development.

โKisumu is looking forward to improved investment opportunities as investors will now find it attractive to set up in the region,โ he said.
Agina highlighted Kisumuโs proximity to Uganda, Northern Tanzania, South Sudan and the entire great lakes region making it an ideal to the East and central African markets.
The second phase of the SGR development by Kenya Railways will subdivided into three phases Nairobi to Naivasha, Naivasha to Kisumu and Kisumu to Malaba.
