Shalom Hospital nurse who allegedly administered wrong dose that killed seven-month old baby has been charged with manslaughter.

Appearing before Senior Resident Magistrate Irene Kahuya, the nurse together with her two colleagues were charged with manslaughter, recklessness and handling poisonous medicine without the laid out procedure.

The three, Vincent Njau Nganga, Irene Katete Mutinda and Odhiambo Kennedy, however denied the charges.

Magistrate Kahuya released them on bond of Ksh500,000 and a surety of a similar amount.

The three were accused of administering a dosage that caused the death of Baby Ethan on Sunday afternoon.

It has been revealed that the nurse injected Baby Ethan with a dose of morphine that was 20 times stronger than what his body could take.

That allegedly led to his death at Shalom Hospital.

Following his death, the hospital was closed down and their licence revoked.

The chairman of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDB) Fredrick Were noted that the baby was supposed to be given the morphine through the mouth but the nurse injected him.

It is claimed that the oral prescription was not available and the practitioner directed that he instead be injected with the dose.

Were stated: “The child went drowsy, went home sleepy and was brought back still very sleepy and in that process of time the child was lost.”

According to post-mortem results done at Montezuma Monalisa funeral home, where the baby’s body is, Ethan succumbed following a breathing problem that arose from the swelling of his brain.

It is believed that his brain swelled after receiving the overdose of morphine.
