Residents of Mingawo Village in East Gem, Siaya County, are in shock following a disturbing incident involving the unlawful exhumation of a child’s body.

According to police, the incident was reported on April 20, 2026, by a 19-year-old woman.

The report indicates that at around 1:00 a.m., a man who is a boyfriend to the complainant, allegedly went to an aunt’s homestead and requested a jembe before proceeding to the grave of their late infant aged one year and two weeks.

The child had passed away on March 10, 2026, and was buried four days later.

It is alleged that the suspect proceeded to exhume the body before he was spotted by the deceased’s aunt, who noticed suspicious activity at the gravesite.

She raised an alarm, prompting the suspect to flee into the darkness.

However, the full extent of the incident was only discovered later in the morning when family members found the grave had been tampered with and the body partially removed.

Police officers who visited the scene confirmed that the grave had been extensively opened and the body exposed. Crime scene personnel from Siaya processed and documented the area.

With the assistance of police, the family later transferred the remains to a mortuary, where they are being preserved pending a decision on reburial.

Authorities have launched investigations into the incident and efforts to trace the suspect are ongoing.

Meanwhile, police in Nyatike Sub-county, Migori County, launched investigations after the body of an unidentified man was discovered floating in River Ongoche.

According to police, the incident was reported on April 20, 2026, at around 8:00 p.m., after members of the public spotted the body drifting downstream.

Police officers who responded to the scene successfully retrieved the body of the middle-aged man.

The scene was processed as part of preliminary investigations.

The body was later moved to Migori County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending identification and a post-mortem examination.

Authorities are appealing to members of the public with missing relatives to come forward and assist in identifying the deceased. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
