Sifuna condemns ‘state-sponsored violence’ in Kitengela after man is killed

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna strongly condemned what he described as state-sponsored political violence and police brutality following deadly clashes in Kitengela on Sunday.

In a statement issued after the February 15, 2026 incident, Sifuna accused police officers and alleged hired goons of violently disrupting what he termed a peaceful assembly attended by residents exercising their constitutional right to protest.

He issued a statement signed by several other leaders aligned to his group.

According to the statement, one person — identified as Vincent Ayomo, a young garage worker in Kitengela — was killed during the confrontation, while several others sustained serious injuries. Property, including a public address system set up for the meeting, was also reportedly vandalized.

Sifuna expressed condolences to Ayomo’s family and described his death as tragic and unjustified.

“He came to join other Kenyans in a peaceful assembly. He committed no crime. He provoked nobody,” Sifuna said, questioning the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting.

The senator vowed to pursue justice for the deceased’s family and to push for accountability against those responsible for the violence. He also wished those injured a speedy recovery.

Sifuna further accused president William Ruto and interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen of bearing personal responsibility for the conduct of security agencies, alleging intolerance to democratic competition and suppression of political rights.

He urged Kenyans to remain peaceful but steadfast in exercising their constitutional freedoms, saying intimidation would not deter citizens from participating in democratic processes.

The incident has intensified political tensions, with calls mounting for independent investigations into the events in Kitengela and the conduct of law enforcement officers during public assemblies.

Police used teargas canisters to disperse the meeting on Sunday prompting chaos for the better part of the afternoon.
