Six rescued, four missing after boat capsizes off Lamu Coast
Six crew members were rescued while four others remain missing after a boat capsized in deep-sea waters off Lamu County.
The incident involving MV Shukrani occurred at around 10 pm on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at Mwambasani Bay near Kizingitini in Lamu East.
According to police, fishermen who were in the area responded after the boat capsized and managed to rescue six of the 10 people who were reportedly on board.
The rescued crew members were taken to Kiwayu Dispensary, where they were examined and found to be in stable condition. They were later taken to Kiwayu Police Post for questioning as authorities sought to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The survivors told police that the boat had departed from Lamu and was headed to Somalia, allegedly carrying foodstuffs.
Four other crew members remain unaccounted for as search efforts continue.
Police and local maritime authorities are expected to coordinate further search and rescue operations while investigations continue to establish what caused the vessel to capsize.
And a two-year-old girl drowned after falling into an open well while playing with her five-year-old sister in Stadium area, Kuria West, Migori County.
The incident occurred on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at around 5pm.
The deceased had been left under the care of her elder sister aged five, while their mother was at her workplace at a mining site.
The children reportedly went to a neighbour’s compound where they were playing when Rael fell into an open well.
Her elder sister raised the alarm, prompting neighbours to rescue the child and rush her to Kehancha Sub-County Hospital.
However, she was pronounced dead while undergoing treatment.
Police officers from Kehancha Police Station and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kuria West visited the scene and commenced investigations.
The child’s body was moved to Kehancha Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination to establish the cause of death.
