Social media advert leads police to stolen phone syndicate in Nairobi CBD

A social media advertisement helped police dismantle a suspected mobile phone theft ring in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), leading to the recovery of 22 mobile phones and the arrest of two suspects.

The breakthrough came after a woman whose mobile phone had been stolen at a school along Ngong Road spotted an online advertisement featuring a handset that closely resembled her missing device.

She reported the discovery to police, prompting investigators to launch an immediate operation.

She said a stranger had visited her school and tricked her to leave her mobile phone on the table to attend to his needs. She told police the stranger went to Rudan Junior Schook on Ngong Road claiming to be in need of a placement for his son.

He later grabbed her mobile phone and vanished as captured on security cameras.

Using mobile phone tracking technology, officers traced the signal of the device to a building near Khoja Stage in Nairobi’s CBD.

What began as an effort to recover a single stolen phone quickly developed into a major operation after officers searched the premises and recovered the complainant’s handset along with several other high-end mobile phones believed to have been stolen from members of the public.

Police arrested two suspects found inside the premises and placed them in custody as investigations continue into the suspected theft and resale network.

Authorities said the recovery of 22 mobile phones represents a significant setback for criminals involved in trafficking stolen electronic devices.

The operation highlights the growing role of technology and public cooperation in fighting crime. Investigators credited the complainant’s vigilance and timely reporting for helping uncover what is believed to be a broader criminal enterprise.

The National Police Service reiterated its commitment to combating crime and urged members of the public to continue reporting suspicious activities and to make use of available technological tools when seeking assistance in recovering stolen property.
