South Sudanese refugee man killed in Kakuma clash

A 26-year-old South Sudanese man was killed during a confrontation between two groups of South Sudanese nationals in Kakuma refugee camp, Turkana West Sub-County.

The incident occurred at around midnight on Thursday after a physical altercation involving members of the Nuer clan, who were reportedly armed with crude weapons, broke out at Burundi Market before spreading to Kakuma Four Vision School.

Police officers and DCI personnel responded and established that a conflict had erupted between the two groups.

During the confrontation, Mayok Pum Menyin, a 26-year-old South Sudanese man, sustained an open wound on the left side of his chest. He was rushed to Clinic Seven but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Two other people were injured in the confrontation. One of them sustained a deep cut to the back of his head, was treated and discharged, while the second one aged 22, sustained multiple injuries and remained admitted at Clinic Seven Hospital.

Mayok’s body was transferred to Turkana West Sub-County Hospital Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.

Police investigations into the clash and the circumstances surrounding the death are ongoing.

Elsewhere, a 59-year-old man was found dead by the roadside in the Casino area of Molo Town, Nakuru County, on Thursday morning.

The deceased was identified by his brother as Peter Gitau, who was reportedly a casual worker performing menial jobs within the area.

Police officers visited the scene after receiving a report from a member of the public.

Gitau was found lying on his back in a supine position. A physical examination of the body revealed no visible injuries, although police noted that he appeared extremely weak and emaciated.

Crime Scene Investigation officers documented the scene before the body was moved to the Molo Sub-County Mortuary, where it was preserved pending an autopsy to establish the cause of death.
