The Nairobi County Speaker, Beatrice Elachi and Clerk Jacob Ngwele exchanged blows at the end of the assembly’s sessions yesterday following a disagreement that has been ongoing between the two.

The two have been in a back and forth over claims of corruption and misuse of office for a while now.

The county clerk, Jacob Ngwele accuses the speaker of trying to arm- twist him because he refused to sign the documents of acquiring the Speaker’s house in Karen.

Ngwele claims that the land upon which the house is built still has unsettled matters that have caused him to suspend the purchase.

Speaker Elachi accused Ngwele of making unnecessary purchases in the County office without consultation or following the right procedure. She had called the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to carry out investigations after she discovered numerous cases of double payments of suppliers and “some questionable” projects and goods bought without the approval of the county assembly service board.

County speakers from all 47 counties are entitled to a house, provided by the county since they will  no longer be receiving house allowances, effective June 30, 2018.

Nairobi County decided to purchase a house instead of building one, a move which is yet to be accomplished.

The County Assembly Minority leader, Peter Imwatok acknowledged the altercation and called upon the two parties to explain to the public what exactly is going on between them.
