Stand up and fight for your dignity, Mairura tells MCAs

A former Ruto ally turned critic in the Kisii County Assembly, Bouse Mairura, has accused some ward representatives of abandoning their constitutional oversight role and reducing themselves to “beggars” and errand boys under the county administration.

Mairura, the UDA MCA for Masimba Ward, launched the scathing attack on Sunday as he intensified his campaign for the Nyaribari Masaba parliamentary seat, where he is seeking to unseat incumbent MP Dr Daniel Manduku.

He accused some Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) of prioritising loyalty to Governor Simba Arati over the interests of residents who elected them.

“In Kisii, the county boss launches everything, while many MCAs have been reduced to nothing more than errand boys,” Mairura said.

He challenged Kisii residents to use the 2027 General Election to elect MCAs who would independently represent their wards, question the county executive and demand accountability.

“Vote for MCAs who will fight for you—not MCAs who will worship the Governor,” he said.

Mairura said ward representatives should be at the forefront of demanding answers over challenges facing public hospitals and health centres, including shortages of medicines and essential services.

He also criticised the state of roads across the county, saying residents should not continue suffering because their elected representatives are afraid to question the executive.

The MCA further called for greater scrutiny of county expenditure, urging MCAs to demand transparency, accountability and value for every shilling spent by the devolved government.

“An MCA is not a praise singer. An MCA is not an errand boy. An MCA is an elected representative of the people,” he said.

Mairura said MCAs must have the courage to oppose decisions that short-change residents, even when doing so could expose them to political consequences.

He urged voters to make accountability a central issue in the 2027 elections and reject leaders who, he claimed, put political loyalty ahead of the interests of their constituents.

“We need MCAs with courage, independence and the conviction to say no when the people are being short-changed,” he said.

Mairura, who is also associated with former Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i, called on residents to put public interests above loyalty to individual politicians.

“2027, let us elect leaders who work for the people, speak for the people and fight for the people. Kisii County deserves better. The people deserve better,” he said.

There was no immediate response from the county government or the MCAs to Mairura’s remarks by press time.
