Steve Ballmer is an American businessman, investor, and philanthropist renowned for his long tenure at Microsoft and his ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers NBA team.

Born on March 24, 1956, in Detroit, Michigan, he is the son of Beatrice Dworkin, who was of Jewish descent with family roots in Belarus, and Frederic Henry Ballmer, a Swiss immigrant who worked as a manager at Ford Motor Company.

Ballmer grew up in the affluent suburb of Farmington Hills, Michigan, and became the first in his family to graduate from college.

He attended Harvard University, earning a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and economics in 1977, and briefly enrolled in Stanford’s Graduate School of Business before leaving to join Microsoft in 1980 as its 30th employee and the first business manager hired by co-founder Bill Gates.

He served as CEO of Microsoft from 2000 to 2014, during which time the company’s revenue and market value grew substantially.

After retiring from Microsoft, Ballmer purchased the Los Angeles Clippers in 2014 for $2 billion following a scandal involving the previous owner, and he has since invested heavily in the team, including building the state-of-the-art Intuit Dome arena.

    Siblings

Steve has one sibling, a younger sister named Shelly.

Shelly has maintained a relatively private life compared to her high-profile brother, though she has accompanied him on family trips, including a notable visit to Pinsk, Belarus, in 2007 to explore their maternal Jewish heritage and ancestral roots.

    Career

Ballmer’s professional path began after he left Stanford to join Microsoft in June 1980, quickly rising through the ranks due to his energetic leadership, sales acumen, and loyalty to Bill Gates.

He held various senior roles, including executive vice president of sales and support, and president, before succeeding Gates as CEO in January 2000.

Under his 14-year leadership, Microsoft expanded its dominance in enterprise software, launched the Xbox gaming console, advanced the .NET framework, and made significant early investments in cloud computing through initiatives that laid groundwork for Azure.

Revenue grew from around $25 billion to over $78 billion during his tenure, though the company faced criticisms for missing mobile opportunities.

Ballmer stepped down as CEO in 2014 and left the board to focus on new ventures.

Post-Microsoft, he acquired the Los Angeles Clippers for a then-record $2 billion, transforming the franchise through aggressive investments in talent, facilities, and fan experience.

He also co-founded the Ballmer Group with his wife Connie, a philanthropic organization dedicated to improving outcomes for children and families affected by poverty, emphasizing data-driven approaches to economic mobility.

    Accolades

Ballmer received honorary doctorates, including a Doctor of Laws from the University of Washington and a Doctor of Computer Science and Engineering from Lawrence Technological University.

Among his honors are the Horatio Alger Award for overcoming adversity to achieve success, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor for contributions to American society, and the Harvard Business School Alumni Achievement Award in 2013.

In sports, a 2020 survey by The Athletic voted him the best owner in basketball for his transformative impact on the Clippers.
