Sundar Pichai is an Indian-American business executive renowned for leading one of the world’s most influential technology companies.

Born Pichai Sundararajan on June 10, 1972, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India, he grew up in a modest middle-class Tamil Hindu family in Chennai (formerly Madras).

He rose from humble beginnings to become the Chief Executive Officer of Google since 2015 and of its parent company, Alphabet Inc., since 2019.

Sundar has one younger brother named Srinivasan Pichai.

The two brothers shared a close bond during their childhood, growing up in a cramped two-room apartment where the living room served as their bedroom.

Career

Pichai’s professional path began after completing his education, which included a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering from IIT Kharagpur, a master’s in materials science and engineering from Stanford University, and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

He started his career in engineering and product management roles at companies like Applied Materials.

In 2004, he joined Google, arriving around the time Gmail launched, and quickly made an impact.

He led the development and launch of Google Chrome in 2008, which became the world’s most popular web browser.

Pichai later oversaw Android, Google’s mobile operating system, and managed key software products.

His steady rise through promotions culminated in his appointment as CEO of Google in 2015, where he steered the company through major expansions in search, cloud computing, and emerging technologies.

In 2019, he assumed the additional role of CEO of Alphabet, guiding the broader conglomerate amid challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, workforce restructuring, and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence.

Under his leadership, Google and Alphabet have emphasized AI integration, user-focused innovation, and global reach, serving billions of users worldwide.

Accolades

Pichai was featured in Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2016 and again in 2020.

In 2022, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third-highest civilian award, in the trade and industry category, celebrating his achievements as a global leader of Indian origin.

His tenure has also been marked by consistent rankings among the world’s top executives.
