Supreme Court Announces Easter Recess from March 26 to April 8

The Supreme Court will observe its Easter recess from Thursday, March 26, 2026, to Wednesday, April 8, 2026, both days inclusive, Chief Justice Martha Koome announced in the Kenya Gazette on January 30, 2026.

The recess is in accordance with Article 163(1)(a) of the Constitution, Sections 6A and 29D of the Supreme Court Act, 2011, and Rules 4, 5, and 7 of the Supreme Court Rules, 2020.

During the recess, a duty judge will remain available to handle urgent matters, while the Supreme Court Registry will be open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays, excluding public holidays.

Easter Sunday falls on April 20, 2026, with Good Friday observed on April 18. Easter is the most important Christian holiday, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ three days after his crucifixion. The season marks the end of Lent—a 40-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance—and symbolizes new life and hope. Traditions during this period include Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday, alongside family gatherings and cultural celebrations such as Easter eggs and bunnies.
