Suspect Arrested Over Nine Fraudulent Insurance Claims Linked to Kangundo Road Crash
Detectives from the Insurance Fraud Investigations Unit (IFIU) have arrested a suspect linked to nine fraudulent compensation claims arising from a road accident along Kangundo Road.
The accident involving two motor vehicles occurred on September 8, 2023.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) identified the suspect as Edwin Odhuambo Oduor, who is accused of orchestrating the submission of fraudulent compensation claims by individuals who allegedly pretended to have sustained injuries in the crash.
The accident involved an insured motor vehicle and a third-party vehicle.
According to the DCI, the matter was referred to the IFIU by Jubilee Insurance Company after the insurer raised concerns over the authenticity of the compensation claims.
Investigations by detectives subsequently established that documents submitted in support of the claims had allegedly been obtained fraudulently from Mama Lucy Hospital and Kayole Police Station.
The documents were reportedly used to support claims by different individuals who alleged that they had sustained injuries in the accident.
The investigation sought to establish how the claims were organised and whether the supporting documents had been legitimately issued by the institutions named in the claims.
After completing investigations, detectives forwarded the inquiry file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further action.
The ODPP recommended that Oduor be charged with conspiracy and insurance fraud.
Detectives subsequently arrested the suspect in the Omega area of Kasarani.
He was processed and is awaiting arraignment at the Milimani Law Courts, where he is expected to face the recommended charges.
The DCI said its detectives were continuing to pursue individuals and criminal networks suspected of staging accidents, falsifying documents and filing fraudulent insurance claims to obtain money unlawfully.
“Detectives continue to pursue individuals and criminal networks involved in staging accidents, falsifying documents and presenting fraudulent insurance claims for unlawful financial gain,” the DCI said.
The agency warned members of the public against exploiting legitimate insurance compensation systems through deception.
“Insurance fraud is a serious criminal offence, and those who seek to exploit legitimate compensation systems through deception should be warned that their schemes can be detected, investigated and prosecuted,” the DCI added.
