Teacher killed in fire incident in house at school in Kitui County

Police in Kitui West Sub-County are investigating a fire outbreak that claimed the life of a teacher at Mutonguni Girls High School.
According to the police, the incident occurred on the night of May 16, 2026, at the school’s staff quarters located about two kilometres west of the station.
The school principal reported that at around 11pm, a watchman heard a loud bang coming from the house of teacher Catherine Sally Musau, who lived alone in the quarters.
The watchman rushed to the residence and noticed thick smoke billowing from the house. He alerted other teachers and students, who broke down the door, which had been locked from inside, and managed to extinguish the fire.
Inside the bedroom, they found the burnt body of Musau lying on her back.
Police officers visited and processed the scene. Investigators established that the bedroom had been completely gutted by the fire, destroying all property inside.
The body was moved to the Muthale Mission Hospital Mortuary awaiting an autopsy.
Authorities said the scene has been preserved for further examination by fire experts from the Kitui Fire Department, investigators from Kenya Power, and crime scene investigators from the Kitui County Criminal Investigations Office to determine the source and cause of the fire.
And police in Kwanza Sub-County, Trans-Nzoia County, are investigating the murder of a 39-year-old man whose body was found by the roadside along the Endebess–Kitale road.
According to the police, members of the public alerted the deceased’s brother after spotting the lifeless body at the Namanjalala Forkland area near St Kizito Catholic Matisi Parish.
Police officers said the deceased was identified as Isaac Wanjala.
Police said the body was found lying on its back with a fresh deep stab wound under the chin.
Investigators recovered an electric tester believed to have been used as the murder weapon and preserved it as an exhibit for forensic analysis.
The body was moved to the Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary pending an autopsy as investigations continue.
Police in Emuhaya Sub-county, Vihiga County, launched investigations into the killing of a 35-year-old man whose body was found outside a house in Mwichehe village.
According to a report recorded at Embali Police Station through Ebukoolo Police Post, the body was discovered on the morning of May 17, 2026.
Police officers visited the scene at Emukola sub-location in Ipali location.
The deceased was identified as Jairo Elunyenya, a 35-year-old Luhya man.
Investigators said the body had visible cut wounds on the head, indicating he may have been attacked by unknown assailants.
Scene of crime personnel processed the area before the body was moved to the Dophil Hospital Mortuary for preservation awaiting postmortem examination.
