Teenager found dead in incomplete swimming pool in Siaya

An 18-year-old secondary school student was assaulted and killed by known persons in Ndigwa, Rarieda Sub-County, Siaya County, after being accused of stealing Sh1,000.

The body of Collins Onyango Otonde, a Grade 10 pupil at Ndigwa Secondary School, was discovered dumped in an incomplete swimming pool within an unfinished building at Ndigwa Junction on Friday morning.

Preliminary investigations established that the teenager had sustained visible injuries to his head, shoulder, back and hands, raising suspicion that he had been assaulted before his death.

According to police, the deceased was attacked at about 10pm on Thursday night after being accused of stealing Sh1,000 from his mother.

The mother and two other adult men, who were physically identified by investigators, have been named as suspects in the suspected murder.

The suspects had not been arrested by the time of reporting and were said to be at large, with police launching efforts to trace and apprehend them.

No exhibits were recovered from the scene.

The body was moved to Madiany Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

Police investigations are ongoing. And police in Gem-Wagai, Siaya County, are investigating the suspected murder of a 34-year-old motorcyclist and the subsequent mob killing of a 22-year-old man who was allegedly linked to the first death.

The first victim, identified as Fredrick Omondi Odalo, was found dead on a footpath about 200 metres from his homestead in Ogero Village, Gombe Sub-location, on Friday morning.

Police officers visited the scene and found Odalo’s body with a deep cut wound on the head.

His red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, was found a few metres from the body together with its ignition key. A mobile phone was also recovered at the scene.

The circumstances and motive of the suspected killing had not been established by the time of reporting.

However, preliminary investigations established that the phone belonged to Otieno Omondi, 22, who was subsequently sought by members of the public.

Police said members of the public subjected Otieno to mob injustice before burning him to death.

The circumstances under which the public linked Otieno to Odalo’s death remain under investigation.

Police processed the two scenes before the bodies of the two men were moved to the Yala Level IV Hospital mortuary, where they are being preserved pending postmortem examinations.

Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding both deaths and efforts are underway to establish the events leading to the suspected murder and the subsequent mob killing.

Police discourage mob lynching and want suspects to be surrendered for processing.
