    Three casual labourers die while draining septic pit at Makindu Boys High School

    Police in Makindu, Makueni County, are investigating a tragic drowning incident in which three casual labourers died while draining a septic pit at Makindu Boys High School.

    The incident happened on Thursday afternoon.

    Police officers rushed to the school and established that the school principal had hired five casual labourers to manually drain a septic pit.

    The deceased were identified as Sammy Nzau Kula, 63, Dennis Sammy Kula, 23 and
    Maurice Mutia, 40.

    Preliminary investigations indicate that Maurice Mutia accidentally slipped and fell into the septic pit while the work was ongoing.

    Sammy Nzau and his son Dennis reportedly attempted to rescue him but they also became trapped and drowned inside the pit.

    The bodies were later retrieved by police officers working together with the Makueni County Disaster Rescue Team.

    Crime Scene Investigation officers processed, documented and photographed the scene before the bodies were moved to Makindu Sub-County Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem examination.

    Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

    And police in Tana Delta Sub-County, Tana River County, are investigating a drowning incident after the body of an unidentified middle-aged man was recovered from the Tana River near Garsen town.

    According to a report filed at Garsen Police Station, members of the public alerted authorities after spotting a body floating at Center Two area within Garsen.

    Police officers visited the scene and confirmed the incident.

    The deceased, described as an unknown middle-aged man, was found floating in the river, having apparently drowned.

    The body was retrieved from the water and the scene photographed by investigators before the remains were moved to Malindi morgue for preservation and postmortem examination.

    Police said efforts to identify the deceased and establish the circumstances surrounding the drowning are ongoing.

    Meanwhile, police in Lamu East Sub-County have confirmed the recovery of the body of a 65-year-old man who had earlier been reported missing in what was suspected to be a drowning incident.

    The decomposing body of Badala Komoro Barisa was discovered on Thursday morning at Chozi area in Vumbe.

    The body was found floating face down among mangrove trees by a search team comprising local fishermen from Faza.

    Police said the deceased was wearing a T-shirt and shorts and was discovered approximately 50 metres from the area where the group had earlier camped.

    The body was retrieved from the water and moved to Faza Sub-County Hospital.

    A postmortem examination was conducted before the body was released to family members for burial in accordance with Muslim customs.

    Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the suspected drowning incident are ongoing.
