Three More SIM Swap Scammers Arrested As Crackdown Intensifies

Three suspected SIM swap scammers have been arrested, the National Police Service  has announced.

Joseph Kuria Kariuki, Grace Wanjira and Meshack Okoth Okuta were arrested on Tuesday, in connection to a scam that has seen Kenyan lose millions.

“The trio were arrested in connection with the recent case that saw a Kiambu MCA lose Ksh1.9 million shillings. One of the key suspects is a Safaricom Customer Care Executive who has since been dismissed. Detectives are closing in on leads that may lead to the arrest of two more,” tweeted the National Police Service.

Last week, two suspects were arrested in connection to the fraud. The suspects, Safaricom employee Maurice Musoti and a Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) engineering student, Rian Obaga Nyagaka were found to be in possession of 2,160 unused Safaricom SIM cards, 44 used cards, five till agent numbers, three MPESA Safaricom booklets and an internet booster router.

The police said that they are tracing two more, one connected the the incidence where a Kiambu MCA lost Ksh1.9 million.

“Detectives are closing in on leads that may lead to the arrest two more suspects one of them an employee with a local bank where the complainant (the MCA) had banked his money,” added the police.
