A family weekend ended tragically when their three-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool in Watamu, Kilifi County.

The family had checked into Saba Saba Villas on January 16 for the weekend and were to leave three days later.

On Saturday night, their three-year-old son went to swim alone in the swimming pool when he drowned.

The family told police they realized the boy who had been playing in the house was missing. They mounted a search for him only to find his body floating in the water. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy, police said.

Meanwhile, a tout and his driver were stoned to death after they were accused of attempting to rob a passenger on a matatu in the Ngara area. Two other men who were said to be accomplices were admitted in hospital in a serious condition, police said of the Sunday afternoon drama.

A passenger raised an alarm saying he had been attacked and robbed by the crew and two other men who had been acting as passengers in a matatu that was headed for Gachie. This attracted the attention of a mob that blocked the road and attacked the four with stones and twigs.

Police said two of the men died on arrival in hospital while two others were admitted in serious condition.

The bodies were moved to the mortuary pending identification and autopsy. Police said they recovered several mobile phones from the matatu which are believed to have been robbed from other unsuspecting passengers.

Such incidents are common on weekends where passengers have complained of being robbed by matatu crews who turn out to be robbers.

Police said they are investigating the incidents even as they condemned the mob lynching one.

Nairobi police boss George Seda said they are pursuing mob lynching incidents so far reported for action.

“We always urge the public to surrender suspects to authorities for action. Mob lynching is criminal,” he said.
