Career
Moretti’s career began in theater, where he became a permanent member of the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel ensemble and performed at the Munich Kammerspiele from 1985 to 1995, earning acclaim for roles in productions such as Bertolt Brecht’s “Man is Man,” Herbert Achternbusch’s “Der Frosch,” and Shakespeare’s “Troilus and Cressida.”

His breakthrough in television came with the role of Richard Moser in the popular series “Inspector Rex” (known as “Kommissar Rex” in German) from 1994 to 1998, where he portrayed a dedicated detective alongside a clever dog, captivating audiences across Europe and beyond.
Moretti has since expanded into film, appearing in notable works like “A Hidden Life” (2019) directed by Terrence Malick, and “The Hard Cops” (2004), showcasing his range from dramatic historical figures to intense action roles.
He has also been a staple at the Salzburg Festival, famously playing the lead in “Jedermann” multiple times, blending classical theater with contemporary interpretations.

Moretti received the Bavarian TV Award for his performance in “Kommissar Rex” in 1995 and again for “Schwabenkinder” in 2004, highlighting his excellence in television drama.
The German Television Award followed suit, honoring him for “Kommissar Rex” in 1996 and “The Return of the Dancing Master” in 2004.
Moretti’s talent was further recognized with the Adolf Grimme Award for “Tanz mit dem Teufel – Die Entführung des Richard Oetker” in 2002 and “Krambambuli” in 1999, as well as the Golden Cable and Golden Lion Awards for “Kommissar Rex” in 1996.
In Austria, he dominated the Romy Gala as Favorite Actor from 2000 to 2005, winning consecutively for six years, and earned the Italian Telegatto for the same series in 1998.
Early in his career, he was named Actor of the Year by the Bavarian Academy of the Arts in 1987 and received the Bavarian Film Prize in 1995.
