Top surgeon at The Karen Hospital dies after fall at Karen mall

A senior doctor at The Karen Hospital has died after reportedly falling at a shopping mall in Karen, Nairobi.

Dr. James Kariuki, a Senior Registrar in General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellow at the hospital, died on Sunday morning in an incident that shocked colleagues and friends.

In a statement, the hospital described Dr. Kariuki as a dedicated medic who served patients with professionalism, compassion and humility.

“Dr. Kariuki was a valued member of The Karen Hospital family, remembered for his dedication, professionalism, compassion, and commitment to patient care,” the statement said.

The hospital added that he was admired for his warm personality and ability to connect easily with colleagues, patients and friends.

“He carried himself with warmth and humility, always wearing a smile and connecting easily with everyone around him. His friendly nature, kind spirit, and ability to relate with people made him greatly loved by colleagues, patients, and friends alike.”

His death was described as a major loss to the hospital fraternity and the wider medical community.

The circumstances surrounding the fall were not immediately clear by Sunday afternoon.

A colleague said the deceased had been on dirty on Saturday night and had taken a break at a mall near the hospital when he tripped and fell fatally.

He fell on his head sustaining fatal injuries at the scene.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy

The hospital sent condolences to his family, friends and colleagues as tributes continued to pour in.

“May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the statement added.
