Traffic chaos anticipated on Mombasa Road as Cabanas section temporarily closed
Motorists using Mombasa Road towards Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) were notified of a temporary partial closure of a section of the highway at Cabanas area.
Officials said this may cause traffic chaos as they urged motorists to seek alternative routes if necessary.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) said the closure will affect the Mombasa Road (A8) section at the Cabanas Eastern Bypass off-ramp, on the JKIA-bound side.
The closure took effect from Thursday, September 17, 2026, and will remain in place until Thursday, October 22, 2026.
According to a public notice dated September 10, the closure is necessary to facilitate the construction of a box drain along the affected section.
Motorists travelling towards JKIA from the Eastern Bypass will be directed to use a designated diversion lane. Traffic marshals will be deployed to guide motorists and minimise disruption.
KeNHA has urged motorists to follow the proposed traffic management plan and cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals working at the site.
Normal traffic operations are expected to resume once construction works are completed.
The announcement came shortly after motorists on another major Nairobi road experienced disruption for two days following a temporary closure on Waiyaki Way.
On Wednesday and Thursday, there was heavy traffic along Waiyaki Way following the closure of the overpass at the ABC Place–Red Hill Road Junction.
The disruption was linked to maintenance and construction works on the Nairobi Expressway after the Westlands Exit.
MOJA Expressway Company said the works would run from 8pm on September 8 to 5pm on September 20, with motorists exiting the expressway at Westlands directed to join the lower A8 road along Waiyaki Way.
The diversion put additional pressure on the already busy Waiyaki Way corridor, particularly during peak hours, with motorists advised to allow extra travel time and follow instructions from traffic marshals.
The traffic chaos were being experienced on Friday. The city has been chocking in traffic jams partly due to ongoing construction works on some areas. Some contractors are rushing to repair trenches in anticipation for El Nino chaos.
