Early Life
Treach was born Anthony Shawn Criss on December 2, 1970, in East Orange, New Jersey. He grew up alongside his younger brother, Diesel, who later became a member of the hip-hop group Rottin Razkals. From an early age, Treach immersed himself in music, eventually forming a rap group that would evolve into one of the most popular hip-hop collectives of the 1990s.
Naughty by Nature
In 1986, Treach co-founded The New Style with DJ Kay Gee and Vin Rock. Their debut album, Independent Leaders (1989), caught the attention of Queen Latifah, who began mentoring the group. Soon after, they rebranded as Naughty by Nature, a name that would become legendary in hip-hop.
The group’s self-titled 1991 album propelled them to stardom, featuring the hit single O.P.P., which went 2× Platinum and landed in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. Their follow-up albums, 19 Naughty III (1993) and Poverty’s Paradise (1995), solidified their reputation, with Hip Hop Hooray becoming another anthem of the era. Poverty’s Paradise even won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album in 1996, making history as one of the first hip-hop albums to earn that honor.
Over the years, Naughty by Nature released seven studio albums, including Nineteen Naughty Nine: Nature’s Fury (1999), IIcons (2002), and Anthem Inc. (2011). With chart-topping singles like Jamboree and collaborations with artists such as Queen Latifah, Michael Jackson, Boyz II Men, and Aaliyah, Treach established himself as one of the most distinctive voices in hip-hop.
Acting and Directing Career
Beyond music, Treach has built a notable career in acting. He appeared in films such as The Meteor Man (1993), Jason’s Lyric (1994), Book of Love (2002), Today You Die (2005), A Day in the Life (2009), and The Getback (2023). On television, he had roles in New York Undercover, Oz, Soul Food, Third Watch, Law & Order, The Sopranos, and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
From 2020 to 2022, he played Brother X on the BET series The Family Business. Treach has also directed music videos, including for Naughty by Nature, and produced films such as Equal Standard (2020) and Lord of the Streets (2022).

He has three children, including daughter Egypt Jahnari Criss with Sandra Denton, better known as Pepa from Salt-n-Pepa. Egypt has followed in her parents’ footsteps, appearing on WE tv’s Growing Up Hip Hop.
Treach married Pepa in 1999, but the marriage ended in divorce in 2001. In 2019, he married Cicely Evans, with whom he has two children.
Despite his success, Treach has had legal issues, including an arrest in 2014 for reckless driving and outstanding warrants related to motor vehicle violations and child support.
