Bauer made his MLB debut with the Diamondbacks in 2012.
His time with the team was marked by inconsistency, leading to a trade to the Cleveland Indians in 2013.
During his tenure with the Indians from 2013 to 2019, Bauer developed into a top-tier pitcher, known for his strong strikeout ability and innovative approach to pitching that included using advanced analytics.
In 2018, he was named an All-Star for the first time.
In 2019, Bauer was traded to the Cincinnati Reds, where he continued to excel.
His performance peaked in 2020 when he won the National League Cy Young Award, posting a remarkable 1.73 ERA and leading the league in several pitching categories.

In April 2022, he received a suspension of 324 games for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy; this was later reduced to 194 games after an appeal.
After being released by the Dodgers in January 2023, Bauer signed with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) for the 2023 season.
In 2024, he joined the Diablos Rojos del México in the Mexican League, where he had an outstanding season, earning Pitcher of the Year honors with a record of ten wins and a 2.48 ERA.
