A teacher at Hulugho Primary School in Garissa County was killed in an al-Shabaab attack, raising renewed concerns over the safety of educators working in insecurity-prone areas.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on Monday confirmed the death of Stephen Vundi Musili, who was brutally attacked and killed on January 26, 2026, by suspected militants in Hulugho Sub-County.
Musili, who was employed by the Commission on January 2, 2025, had been teaching at the school for just over a year. TSC described him as a dedicated and courageous educator who had committed himself to serving learners in a challenging environment.
Working in coordination with security agencies, the government has flown the body to Nairobi, where it is preserved at Chiromo Funeral Home pending burial arrangements.
TSC said it is engaging the teacher’s family to ensure they receive the necessary support and that he is accorded a dignified send-off.
In response to the incident, TSC, together with other relevant government agencies, is scheduled to visit Hulugho Sub-County on January 27, 2026, to assess the security situation on the ground and determine the safety of teachers and other public servants stationed in the area.
The Commission CEO Evaleen Mitei strongly condemned the killing, terming it a heinous and cowardly act of terror that not only claimed the life of a young teacher but also threatens the right to education and the safety of learners and educators.
The attack comes amid persistent security challenges in parts of northern Kenya, where al-Shabaab militants have repeatedly targeted non-local teachers, security officers, and other government workers.
TSC said it takes the safety and welfare of teachers seriously and will continue to work with the government and security agencies to enhance protection measures for its staff, particularly those serving in high-risk regions.
The killing has once again sparked calls for enhanced security and support for teachers deployed to remote and volatile areas, as the education community mourns yet another life lost in the line of duty.
