Twin toddlers drown in water-filled quarry in Siaya County

Two-and-a-half-year-old twins drowned in a water-filled quarry in Nyajuok area, Siaya County.

The bodies of Harriet Akoth and Hallian Odhiambo were retrieved by members of the public from the quarry at Kandemba ‘A’ Village, Nyajuok Sub-Location, South Alego Location, on Tuesday evening.

Police officers visited the scene after receiving reports from members of the public at about 7.20pm.

The quarry, which was filled with stagnant water, is located about 200 metres from the twins’ family home.

Preliminary information from villagers indicated that the twins had been left by their mother, Caroline Atieno, in the morning under the care of their immediate neighbour, Irene Achieng.

The children reportedly went outside to play after lunch but unknowingly wandered towards the quarry. Achieng was later informed by villagers that the children had drowned.

Members of the public retrieved the bodies before police arrived at the scene.

The bodies had no visible physical injuries, according to police.

Crime Scene Investigation officers from Siaya processed and documented the scene before the bodies were moved to the Siaya County Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy.

Police have commenced investigations into the incident.

And police in Kigumo, Murang’a County, launched investigations after the body of an unidentified man was retrieved from a river.

Police proceeded to the scene and retrieved the body of the male adult.

Police said the man, whose identity had not been established, was estimated to be about 55 years old and had visible injuries on his body.

The circumstances surrounding his death remained unclear.

The body was moved to Kigumo Sub-County Hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem examination as investigations continued.

And a 66-year-old woman drowned in a stream near her home in Kithiriti Village, Kirinyaga County, after she reportedly fell into the water while washing her legs.

Margret Kariuko’s lifeless body was discovered in the stream at about 10.30pm on Tuesday, September 1, according to a police report.

The stream was about 10 metres from her home in Kithiriti Sub-Location, Kutus Location, in Mwea East Sub-County.

Police officers from Kutus Police Station and DCI Wang’uru visited the scene and established that Kariuko had gone to the nearby stream to wash her legs when she accidentally fell into the water with her head facing downwards.

She is believed to have suffocated and drowned.

Police said there were no visible physical injuries on the body. Family members told investigators that Kariuko was epileptic.

Crime Scene Investigation officers documented the scene before the body was moved to Kibugi Mortuary, where it was preserved awaiting a postmortem examination.
