Two miners buried alive while harvesting murram in Webuye

Two men were buried alive while they were harvesting murram in a village in Webuye, Bungoma County.
Police said the incident happened on February 11 as a group of four ventured into a quarry for the murram for construction.
Two others escaped unhurt after the wall of the site caved in trapping one Evans Juma, 38 and Wycliffe Masika, 28.
The bodies were retrieved and moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.
Local administrators visited the scene and declared it a crime scene out of bounds for other miners.
Majority of locals venture into the sites for murram that is used for among others construction.
In Ithanga, Muranga County, a boy aged 18 and a student at the Mugumo Secondary School collapsed and died while jogging at the school playground.
He was among students playing there when he collapsed. He was rushed to Ithanga Health Centre for treatment but he was pronounced dead on arrival. The parents were notified immediately and responded as the body was moved to the mortuary.
In Kiriaini, Muranga County, police said they are investigating an incident where on Peter Kago, 45 died after he had been assaulted by unknown people. The assault happened on January 31, 2026 in the town and he succumbed to the injuries in the hospital nearly two weeks later. Police said they are investigating the incident.
The body is preserved at Nyeri provincial hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem examination.
No arrest has been made and motive not yet known.
In Kegonga, Migori County, a shopkeeper was hacked and seriously wounded in a robbery at his premises.
He sustained a deep cut on his right hand, police said. Witnesses said four men who were wearing face masks and armed with a rifle and swords struck before escaping with unknown amount of money.
The hunt on the suspects continued on Thursday, police said adding the victim was admitted in hospital in a stable condition.
The area has been experiencing a rise in crime amid calls for action to tame the trend.
