Two tour guides are missing after their Land Cruiser van was swept by raging water at the Mara River in Transmara, Narok County.

The incident happened on February 25, 2026 evening as the driver Edwin Mpario, 37 and an occupant identified as Moses Kipempeu, 32 crossed the swollen river using their van.

It was swept downstream where it was on February 26, 2026 recovered. The two were missing and presumed dead, police said.

A search mission was staged in the area in vain. The wreckage of the van was recovered from the water on Thursday in an exercise that attracted a crowd.

Officials said the search for those missing continued Friday. A section of the river has crocodiles.

Officials said most rivers are swollen in the area following heavy rains that have been experienced.

They want motorists and pedestrians to be cautious when crossing the sites.

The meteorological department has warned of continued heavy rains in most parts of the country until early March.

Some parts of Migori have experienced flooding. Officials said some bridges had been destroyed by the raging floods after heavy rains in the area.

And a 32-year-old miner was killed at a sand mining site in Ivona, Vihiga County.

This is the latest such incident to happen at sand mining sites amid calls for the need to have safety at the places.

Police said there have also been an increase in similar incidents at gold mining sites.

On February 22, 2026, Willis Kidwaro was among a group that was harvesting sand in Buhani area when the walls caved in and trapped him. His colleagues did not realise he was missing or had been trapped.

His family said he failed to return home on February 22, 2026 as usual, raising concerns among some of them.

It was until after four days when the decomposed body was discovered at the scene covered by sand, police said.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy, police said adding they were investigating the tragedy.
