Uchumi Supermarkets across Nairobi remain closed on Wednesday, 13 December for a restocking exercise.

In a notice, the management noted that the outlets would open its doors on Thursday, December 14.

”The management wishes to inform the public that Uchumi Nairobi branches will remain closed on 13th December 2017 for restocking our shelves. All Uchumi staff will look forward to welcoming our valued customers back to our stores as we re-open for business on 14th December 2017.”

The restocking was made possible by a Sh700 million loan from the government before the management comes up with a plan that will help the company stay afloat.

The move comes a week after its CEO Julius Kipng’etich, resigned taking the board by surprise.

“The board of directors has accepted, with reluctance, the resignation of the chief executive officer of the company, Dr Julius Kipng’etich, with effect from November 30, 2017 to pursue personal interests,” the company said.

Uchumi just like Nakumatt has closed down a number of its branches. Nakumatt short for Nakuru Mattresses only recently started restocking its outlets while closing down some.

Nakumatt was forced to shut down one of its outlets in Tanzania over rent arrears.
