    President Kenyatta Launches Kenya Coast Guard Service, To Protect Kenyan Water Territories

    President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS) in Mombasa County on Monday.

    KCGS is a multi-agency service established under the Kenya Coast guard service act, 2018 and has been tasked with enforcing law and order within Kenyan water territories.

    It has also be tasked with prosecuting maritime offenders and controlling pollution while taking sanitation measures to ensure that the maritime border is clean and secured.

    KCGS was launched in the presence of DP William Ruto, CS Najib Balala and Governor Ali Hassan Joho among other leaders.

    Governor Amason Kingi was scheduled to attend but was stranded in Italy after his passport was stolen.

    The service will be headed by Brigadier Victor Naisho Loonena and will comprise of personnel from other agencies such as the Army, Intelligence service, police and trained civilians.

    President Uhuru also commissioned the vessel, MV Doria, which will be used for surveillance in the water.

    CS Fred Matiang’i gave assurance that they are working on maritime protection.

    “Our responsibility is to ensure the security of all our people, not negotiate with others. We will not negotiate with our marine resources and marine integrity.”
