A university student died by suicide in his room in Kesses area, Uasin Gishu County.

The body of Dickson Mutinda, who was a second-year business management student at the Moi University Annex Campus, was found hanging on a truss with a rope tied around his neck.

He left a suicide note saying he could not keep fighting.

His colleagues told police they had left for the afternoon classes on February 24, 2026, and left the victim in the room in Sugunanga shopping centre.

They added they came back and found the door to the room locked from inside before they forced it open when they found out Mutinda had died by suicide.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy, police said.

Suicide cases have been on the rise with police recording up to five daily. Most of the victims are men, statistics show amid probe on the same.

The World Health Organisation says such cases are attributed to joblessness, death, academic failures or pressures, legal difficulties and financial difficulties.

Other reasons are bullying, previous suicide attempts, history of suicide in a family, alcoholism and substance misuse, depression and bipolar disorder.

In the police and other security agencies, authorities say they are exposed to many forms of trauma that lead some to suicide in a worrying trend.

And police are investigating an incident where a gang raided Sambuli Primary School in Imbiakalo, Kakamega County and stole 54 government tablets.

The incident was discovered on February 24 when the administration opened for the day. Police visited the scene and announced investigations were ongoing. It was established that the gang accessed the scene through the roof.

In Webuye, Bungoma County, police recovered 32 jerricans with 250 liters of ethanol each valued at Sh8 million being transported in a lorry.

The lorry had been abandoned near a petrol station when police who were alerted moved in to inspect it.

The driver was missing, police said as they towed the lorry with the contents to the local police station.
