Born Vincent Samson Appice on September 13, 1957, in Brooklyn, New York, he began playing drums at a young age, influenced heavily by his family, particularly his older brother.

    Siblings

Vinny is the younger brother of legendary drummer Carmine Appice, who is eleven years his senior.

Carmine, a trailblazer in rock drumming with credits including Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, Rod Stewart, and Jeff Beck, served as a major early influence on Vinny.

The brothers share the same drum teacher from their youth, and Vinny has often spoken about watching Carmine’s bands rehearse and attending his concerts as a child.

    Career

Appice’s professional journey began in his teens, with early session work including contributions to recordings with Rick Derringer and even an appearance alongside John Lennon at age sixteen.

His breakthrough came in 1980 when he joined Black Sabbath during the tour for their album Heaven and Hell.

Replacing Bill Ward, Appice brought a fresh, heavy energy to the band and appeared on the studio album Mob Rules (1981) and the live release Live Evil (1982).

He later rejoined Black Sabbath for the 1991 album Dehumanizer.

In 1982, Appice left Black Sabbath alongside vocalist Ronnie James Dio to form the band Dio, where he became a core member.

His thunderous drumming defined Dio’s sound on landmark albums such as Holy Diver (1983), The Last in Line (1984), Sacred Heart (1985), Intermission (1986), and Dream Evil (1987), before departing in 1989.

He rejoined Dio for later periods, including the 2000s.

Appice also participated in the supergroup Heaven & Hell, a Black Sabbath lineup featuring Dio, which released the album The Devil You Know in 2009.

Beyond these flagship roles, Appice has played with acts like Axis, WWIII, Lynch Mob, Kill Devil Hill, and Last in Line, while also engaging in solo projects, instructional materials such as his book Rock Steady and DVD Hard Rock Drumming Techniques, and global drum clinics.

In recent years, he has continued performing, recording, and collaborating, including with his brother Carmine.

    Accolades

In 2017, Appice was inducted into the Hall of Heavy Metal History for his impact on the genre’s drumming.

His work has appeared on numerous multi-platinum and critically acclaimed albums, solidifying his status as an influential figure.

Appice has been featured in major publications, including a 2012 cover story in Modern Drummer magazine, a milestone he noted as a career highlight.
